Application & Admission

The department will not make any predictions on the outcome of potential future applications. Only officially submitted applications and documents are taken into account by the admission committee. Application documents and related information sent via e-mail will not be reviewed or considered.

Application

Excellent students holding a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Natural Sciences, and other disciplines with a strong theoretical-mathematical background are welcome to apply. A minimum background in biology, mathematics, and computer science is mandatory for all students.

The admission committee may issue additional requirement courses to students whose bachelor’s degree curriculum does not fulfil all admission criteria. Additional requirement courses need to be taken in addition to the regular master’s degree programme.

Students from non-biology-focused bachelor’s degree programmes, such as electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, chemistry, or physics, may be admitted with additional requirements of 30 ECTS in biology. The overall programme duration is extended by 1 semester.

For further details on the profile of requirements, please consult the Biotechnology master's degree programme regulations. The academic, language and performance prerequisites for and further details regarding admission to the master's programme in Biotechnology are set out in the appendix of the Study Programme Regulations.

Additional Requirements

Additional requirements are issued by the admission committee if a gap between the student’s Bachelor curriculum and the required profile for the Master programme is determined.

Additional requirements courses issued upon admission need to be taken in addition to the regular master's degree programme. Credits received in this category do not count towards the regular master's degree programme.

Further details on the additional requirement courses in Biology can be found in the ETH course catalogue by browsing through MSc Biotechnology - Additional Requirements.
